Band Bio
Since 1993, Kukuva has been bringing spirited music from our home in Portland, Oregon to festivals, schools and private functions around the Pacific Northwest. Performances include Coos Bay Music Festival, Sand in the City, Zimbabwean Music Festival, Rose Festival and others. Our recordings include Life Is Good released in 1998 and Live Out Loud released in 2008.
We play soprano, tenor, baritone and bass marimbas that are hand made locally. Conga drums, djembe and hosho (gourd shakers) form the percussion section. Attached below, each marimba has a resonator with a membrane to amplify the sound and add the buzzing noise characteristic to the music. Our repertoire is predominantly based on traditional and contemporary music of the Shona people of Zimbabwe as taught to us by local instructors and visiting musicians from Zimbabwe.
Throughout the years of learning, laughing, and performing together, Kukuva has had the delight of entertaining and sharing this unique musical form with thousands of listeners and dancers. It would be our pleasure to bring these joyous sounds and rhythms to your next function.
